Description: In this beautifully produced book, the four volumes of the important classics' on the water craft of the Yangtze are reprinted in a slightly different format, and in a somewhat rearranged fashion. The author was detached from active Custom's service in the early '30's to undertake this nautical research; field research carried out during perhaps the most disturbed period of China's eventful history and in China's recognized trouble spots, amid almost continual fighting, bandit raids, enemy occupation, floods and droughts. The writing and publishing took place in the last few difficult years of the Custom's service after the war There are 626pp including six appendices and an index (not present in the original editions). There are 174 scale plans, many of which were foldouts in the original but have been accomodated here by scale reductions to single pages. The scale shown is in error on pages 168, 171, 201 and 325. The text however provides the measurements correctly. Nearly all the craft shown herein have disappeared by now, making this an important book. Spine faded.
