16 Browning, Colin Arrot , M.D. Surgeon Royal Navy England's Exiles; or, A View of a System of Instruction and Discipline, as Carried Into Effect During the Voyage to the Penal Colonies of Australia
London Darton and Clark 1842 First Edition Hard Cover Good Ex-Library
Withdrawn from State Library of Victoria Australia. Names, bookplates. dates. A learner on his first voyage in the 'Surrey' in 1831, forming opinions on his second voyage in 1834 on 'Arab' he finalised his views -as he says- on his third voyage on the 'Elphinstone'. Apparently the Admiralty approved. Preface notes 'it is equally well fitted for the management and instruction of women as of men' and regulations that 'prohibit all communication between the prisoners and any person on board, save of their own sex' ; and 'the women themselves must supply their own guardians'. Intruiging reading.
