1 McKay, Alexander Scottish Samurai : Thomas Blake Glover, 1838-1911
U. K. Canongate 1997 0862417465 / 9780862417468 Second Enlarged Trade Paperback Nr Fine B & W Illust.
Arriving in Nagasaki in 1859, he played a crucial role in the overthrow of the Shogunate, providing the rebels with Scottish-designed warships, and modern arms. He went on to become a pivotal figure in the growing Mitsubishi empire, founding shipyards and breweries. Over half the early Naval tonnage was provided by him; and he was a guest of honor at Admiral Togo's reception after Tsushima. He founded Japan Brewery (Kirin brewery) , and was paid 3000 yen as token when his former concern was taken over by Mitsubishi- a considerable sum since a detached house with garden in Tokyo at the time cost only 200 yen. He was a womaniser, and one of his mistresses inspired Puccini's Madam Butterfly; a statue was erected in his gardens commemorating same! Regarded as one of the founding fathers of the Japanese economic miracle. A fascinating life, a decade of research involved.
