4 Villiers, Peter : (Based Upon a Study By Alan Villiers) Joseph Conrad Master Mariner : The Novelist's Life at Sea
Dobbs Ferry Sheridan House 2006 1574092448 / 9781574092448 First American Edition Trade Paperback New Mark Myers
Twelve previously unseen and unpublished paintings (commissioned 30 years ago) show all the ships that Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski sailed upon during his 20 year sea career before becoming a novelist. Conrad was injured on the 'Highland Forest', burned out of the 'Palestine', falsely censured for professional misconduct by the Master of the 'Riversdale', survived a brief and dangerous posting as a river-boat captain on the Congo - and finally served as first officer on the famous 'Torrens', a passenger ship sailing between Adelaide and Great Britain. Ultimatly commanded the barque 'Otago', in which he sailed a notable passage from Sydney to Mauritious. Alan Villiers was uniquely qualified to comment on Conrad's life at sea, and his study has been completed by his son. 125pp illust in color.
